American River at Folsom, California

I am finding the best starting point to the American River Bike Trail is the historic center of Folsom, California, as there is free parking! I continue to be amazed how out-of-shape that I really am. But this new bike is a wonderful wakeup call.

Heading north, the infamous Folsom State Prison is in plain view across the river. One can only imagine the hell that goes on in there, and thankful that the view is from the outside peering in from the distance.

Further up the trail the Folsom Lake Dam comes into view. It seems it is in perpetual construction. This area is quite unique, as it borders the massive San Joaquin valley to the west and the Sierra Nevadas to the east.

The Native Americans that lived here centuries before the dam and the prison came feasted on salmon, deer and berries. What remains of this segment of the American River is in the most afluent areas of Sacramento. With this poor river having more dams than about any other, it still proves to be a sight to see.

I have traveled only a small segment of the American River Bike Trail, and my butt and wrists are sore. But since I purchased this bike, l lost about four pounds and sleep so much better.

I am still unsure on this vehicle and very cautious whenever I am riding. But how wonderful to have this new freedom!
