Dealing with the Mexican Tax Man

A woman street vendor with her children after a long day’s work!

I paid a New York City CPA Firm to do my USA taxes this year as I had all this income from Mexico. It cost me $650 but it was well worth it as my IRS and state taxes due were under $2400.

Of course Mexico wants their share of my income as well, and fortunately I have an angel that works for my firm and made all the arrangements. To clarify, she has a wonderful boyfriend, and I am just speaking figuratively.

Like I did with my Indian Visa, she made an appointment online. Today we arrived at the tax office and were given a priority number: C13. Within minutes we were talking to the filing clerk and had all our paperwork in order.

So far so good. Then a guy came and took my finger prints, photo and rentina scan. Hmmm – am I being booked after an arrest? Well no – that’s just how it is done in Mexico.

We were told to wait for the final paperwork and watch for “C13” on the display in the waiting room. Hundreds of others were there. Well apparently “C13” became “13” and we missed our call. After waiting an hour my angel inquired. She can be tough in such matters!

QRO Motorcycle Gangs

For whatever reason hundreds on motorcyclists were cruising the city while I attempted to deal with the Mexican Tax Man!

Well since it was “our” fault for not knowing that C13 became 13 and missing our number, we were given a new one – like going to the back of the line. We waited for hours. Finally my angel found my file and retrieved my FM3 Visa. We left in disgust, but she will make a new appointment – which likely involves only one more signature on my part.

There are so many small moments of joy in this city!

And so it ended. As I was in the central district I decided to have an early dinner at Hanks – my favorite spot on the main square. After a great meal and a few glasses of vino tinto, I wandered about with my little S100 to capture the happenings of the central city that day. By the time I got home, all was fine.

As frustrating as the day was, it was nothing more than being bored sitting in a room with other people being bored. My angel will fix things. Then, remarkably she will leave for London to begin work on her Master’s Degree. She will do well in life and I will miss her.
