Dysfunction and Design

Cool but functionally useless Carbon Fiber Furniture

I spent much of the day in front of my rarely used spanking new workstation and did what I really love to do most: design. I can’t paint, I can’t draw, I can’t sing or dance and I gave up trying to master a musical instrument when I injured my “string fingers” four decades ago.

But I can design. But like writing it takes blood, sweat and tears.

Well over a decade ago I had this crazy idea to build furniture from this stuff called carbon fiber. I was ahead of my times. But wasting my life away working for the man never seemed to give me the energy to “execute” the plan. That, they say is important: execution is everything. Bullshit.

New River

A stress relieving walk along the New River (it flows backwards to the Mississippi River)

Today I took two screen shots from Bing using “carbon fiber furniture” as my search phrase as this is what I found. It’s everywhere. But there are a few problems: all is grossly over-priced, some looks really uncomfortable, and others are just plain ugly.

I’m working to fix that.

Odd for a Sunday to be tied to my computer all day when it was perfect in Blacksburg today. My buddy and I were debating the pending government shutdown on Facebook – which started thanks to the governor of California raising the minimum wage to ten bucks. No minds were changed.

More of the same – pricey nonfunctional design?

But as a precaution if the gov shuts down and fails to pay its bills, I put a stop loss order on all my investments. I hope they don’t kick in because if you are just one of the little people, dividends are one’s only hedge against inflation.

So designing on Sunday is work (more so than drinking beer and watching football). But to compensate I did take a long hike along the New River yesterday. It made working all Sunday (for myself and not the man) bearable.
