Titanium and Five Dollar a Gallon Gas

My new 2012 Ford Focus Titanium

California, it seems, always has the nation’s highest gas prices. Why that is, I am not sure. But I expect, like the overall price of gas, there are some conspirators involved and they are making a killing.

That last time I filled up the 325xi with premium it cost me $70! Given my 50 mile round trip daily commute, I fill up every week. Insane!

Well, one never recovers from the cost of buying a new car with the savings of better gas mileage. But there are some caveats that aid in the justification. First the high cost of maintenace on a BMW. I mean windshield wipers cost $110 to replace! Rear brakes seemed a bargin at just under $800.

And there is a different driving dynamic. The BMW longs for cruising at 85 mph – the Ford Focus Titanium feels confortable at 70 mph. And my old Mazda pickup truck seems safe at about 60 mph. Thank god I can’t afford an M3!

This new car has about every bell and whistle one could want. One never has to pull out a key. It’s got a really cool GPS, a backup camera, Sirus Radio and tons of features that I have yet to discover. I talk to it and it talks back.

Yup, it is a Ford, and kinda handles like one. But my weekly gas bill is about half, and I have fun driving this little car, in a boring kind of way.

I am giving the 325xi a little rest, and planning a restoration to its wheels and paint. I’m thinking it is enjoying a little rest, but a bit envious of it new little bro (or sis). Oh – cars don’t have feelings – or do they?

New stable mates on the first really nice Spring day in El Dorado Hills, California – I like it here!
