Virginia Tech Absent of Students – Glorious!

One has to wonder why these monuments are even built?

You know, I really have little to complain about. It’s the little stuff that annoys me, as does everyone.

Blacksburg is the perfect little town when one event occurs: the students leave for holiday or for the summer. Clearly the merchants suffer with lost revenues, but that is already built into the equation.

It has been so pleasant in Blacksburg since the students headed home for the holidays. Roads are clear, parking lots empty and no wait time at any restaurant anywhere in town. Glorious!

Yet, of course, if Virginia Tech was not here, the town would be just some little redneck environment that no one ever heard of.

So over that last three decades, I’ve become sort of the “nice guy” in the aerospace industry, and guess what? I get assigned all the engineering interns. I even (by mistake) allowed an intern to share my condo back at Boeing in 1999.

What is interesting is, these interns suddenly have to deal with the real world and start communicating with real people. It seems to work.

But here at VT I am surrounded by brilliant kids still living in some kind of fantasy world. They are a pain in the ass. But this is their realm and not mine. Thus, I can’t wait for spring when I can move on. Until then I will just have to deal with it.

15 Bean Soup with Superfood Additives

I have been perfecting this “Hambeans” 15 bean soup for a decade. Start with a bag of 15 bean soup mix. Throw out the favor package. Soak the beans in water overnight. Rinse and place in a big stockpot and fill with water. Bring to a slow boil.

Add superfoods – carrots, kale, red cabbage, celery, onions, garlic, tomatoes, broccoli and leeks.

Sautee a chicken breast in coconut oil – remove from pan and shred – toss it in the pot and mix.

Season with sea salt, white pepper, cumin, turmeric and hot pepper.

Simmer overnight.

Enjoy about the most nutritionally dense food for a week’s lunch. All that is needed is my superfoods fruit smoothie for breakfast and you could live a hundred years in good health (a little red wine would help).
