WTF – El Dorado Hillbilly Travels in Style

The Big Black Bimmer Box – the only way to transport a 52″ Panasonic Plasma and 42″ Sony LCD

I knew I should have bought that custom trailer hitch for the 325xi back when it became available. Oh well, at least I had the roof racks. They are rated for 175 pounds maximum. Well, lets say I have a tad bit more weight in my “custom” roof top carrier!

Thus the straps, tensioned fore & aft. I must say it is a cool design, structurally anyway – 3/4″ hardwood sidewalls and a 1/4″ plywood top and bottom. U-bolts attach it to the racks. All joints are fastened and bonded. In fact I sealed the top seam with silicone to prevent any water ingress. The paint job – well not so good!

A sealed container transport from Piney Point, Maryland to El Dorado Hills, California. Needless to say, I won’t be pushing my little loaded bimmer to its max speed of 144 mph! Nope, a slow steady cruise for the entire route.

The box took a day to build and I spent  another day packing it and the car. I managed to stuff in all my AV gear, cookware, books and my lighting studio.

She’s riding a bit low! Of course BMW over-engineers its vehicles, so I have little worry – so far. It should be interesting once I hit the Rockies.

I was suppose to leave at six a.m. this morning. Yet the exhaustion of the last few days prevented that from happenning. So after this post I’ll take a quick shower, run a last check of the house and begin the 2880 mile journey from Piney Point to El Dorado Hills. I can’t say it will be fun, but what the hell – I’m heading home to Califorina. I will post my progress nightly.
