Rolling into Rawlins

Rolling into Rawlins

Here’s a little fact: most, I am guessing 85%, of Wyoming is an endless collection of boring desolate rolling hills suitable only for cattle. The totally mind-blowing parts of the state like Yellowstone and Teton National Parks take up a relatively small northwest corner of the state. It’s not to say there are not numerous other awesome spots in the state, but they are few and far between.

What is blatantly obvious to me when cruising through historic towns like Cheyenne, Laramie and the lesser known Rawlins, is the abject poverty. The worst, of course, is not visible from the major roads.

This is the case across rural America from the Deep South to the Golden State of California, now having the highest level of poverty in the US. The booming economy and bloated stock markets are meaningless in rural America.

Tomorrow the long haul to Reno. Too bad I have no skill or interest in gambling.
