The Ancient Philadelphia Taverns

Did Ben Franklin hang out here?

Well maybe, as he is buried nearby. But unlikely as this is early 1800’s architecture (for lack of a better term).  But this place may be close to where he once walked, and drank!

Benjamin Franklin wrote: “there can’t be good living where there is not good drinking” and “beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” In Franklin’s time, Philadelphia was the largest English speaking city in America and second only to London in the world. When beer is drunk, beer has to be brewed.

It was sunny and warm for this time of year in Philadelphia. I was here to test-drive my D7000/28-300mm combo. Both are awesome, but the photo pundits were right: that lens is really an FX lens. But still both are best-in-class.

I had one IPA at the place above. Then I crossed over to the Irish Pub pictured below, and had one killer Irish Ale. I will go back to both, as Philly is appears to be my second home for some time to come. But next time I’ll bring a wider lens!

After that first Lagunitas IPA my second stop appeared less gritty!

All in all, it was somewhat productive and perfectly relaxing weekend. It was the first weekend warm enough for some brave souls to sit outside as the sidewalk cafés prepare for Spring. But the D7000 coupled with the 28-300mm Nikkor are not true mates, at least in the city.

  1. Good point! Philly is definitely a beer driven economy: Here’s a list of Philly’s Top 50: http://bit.ly/dgJREE (doubt the two places pictured above made that list).

  2. Good photos and thoughts.
“When beer is drunk, beer has to be brewed”. Could it be “Where Beer is drunk, Beer has to be brewed”? This statement is deep Economic meaning.
